Paper Tigers poised for first winning streak

The Chronicle's softball team will be looking to string together its first winning streak of the season this evening. The Paper Tigers' (2-7) game is at 6:15 at Lee Martinez Park, against Hatrixx (2-7).

The PTs are coming off an impressive 16-10 victory over a tough and scrappy Chipper's Lanes squad (2-7) last week. In that game, the Paper Tigers got a solid pitching performance from Joe "Showtime" Marchfield, who settled down after a wild first inning to tame Chipper's batters with several strikeouts.

"That's why they call him Showtime," captain Joshua Zaffos said, towards the close of the game.

The team also benefited from all-around quality fielding, particularly from leftfielder Jessica Johnson and the middle infield connection of Lee LaJeunesse and Vanessa Martinez, who together brought back memories of the Brooklyn Dodgers' Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson. LaJeunesse also cracked a last-inning grand slam that sealed the victory.

The PTs' performance caused local sports-radio personality Jess Knudsen, co-host of KRFC's "Cheap Seats" to remark, "You guys would be really good if you practiced."

But team members attributed their success to the pregame "warmup" barbecue and beer-drinking.
