Paper Tigers score first win

After weeks of heartbreak, the Chronicle's Paper Tigers softball team pulled out its first victory of the season last night, 9-7, over Eternally Young. The PTs (1-4) had to come back from a 6-2 deficit against their rainbow tie-dyed opponents to earn the win, just hours after a forfeit looked likely because so many regulars were out of town here or there. Instead, a number of subs stepped up and special shout-outs go to Jess, Erin, Jen, Molly, Allison and Leslie for some quality at-bats and solid fielding.

Lee LaJeunesse (1-1) pitched strong throughout and executed a double play in the final inning to get the last two outs and the win, catching a line drive and then tagging out a runner on the third baseline. That play typified a strong night in the field from the PTs. 1B Elliott Johnston looked like Willie "Big Stretch" McCovey or maybe this guy in scooping and reaching for some errant throws, and C Allison Koos vacuumed up two huge outs at the plate, including a laser beam relay from Mike Beckel and Cassie Feely. At the plate, Paul Katers had another monster night with a big triple during the late-inning rally.

Captain Josh Zaffos, who channeled Brooks Robinson while playing 3B, called the win "a celebration of the best of humanity, so long as we're willing to try our hardest, stay hungry and use plenty of Big League Chew."

Next week, the Paper Tigers will try for their first winning streak of the season during a doubleheader. Those games will also be the first of the season for the team at Lee Martinez Park.
